Originally conceived
for Fitnessrace founder Dean Rice in 2003, the Million Mile
Challenge confronts obesity and other societal health issues
head-on. The program challenges cities and corporations to encourage
the formation of teams that participate in walking, running or biking.
Teams compete against each other by racking up miles, and in doing
so improve their own health and raise awareness within their communities.
The Annual National
Invitational Million Mile Challenge is a nationwide
fitness program for companies, organizations, and individuals provided
by FitnessRace.com. The goal is to inspire better fitness and health
habits, by logging at least a million miles of activity nationwide
during the course of a year.
Believing that
"Healthy employees are happy, more productive employees," companies
and communities are encouraged to get individuals and families involved
in ongoing physical activities. The Million Mile Challenge is a
key part of a bigger commitment to better health in the greater
community… a "corporate culture" of good health.
Why are only
biking, walking or running included? These are the simplest activities,
requiring very few items of equipment and only very general physical
skills. Even employees with physical handicaps can participate,
alongside their fellow workers, whether walking with a cane or walker,
riding a wheelchair, or riding tandem on a bicycle built for two!
As we worked with FitnessRace.com and considered other activities,
we wanted to simplify the program so every employee could participate.
Why is the
Challenge for a "Million Miles?" We could have chosen any number.
Frankly, we anticipate participants will log many millions of miles
nationally! A "million miles" is a figurative way of saying, "Let's
get out there and do it in a big way!" Plus, it's got a special
"ring" to it!
The client's
unique "Fitness Tracker" program at www.FitnessRace.com allows every
participant to log his or her own individual miles, so coordinating
dozens of participating teams becomes a simple process. The FitnessRace
site automatically tallies total activity miles for each participant
and team, as well as competing companies.
There is no
charge to participate in the Million Mile Challenge program. For
